Five Stans in One Trip: How to Plan the Route
Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan in a single journey — here is how to sequence the five Stans without backtracking.
Is it really possible?
Yes — with three to four weeks and a sensible route, all five Central Asian republics fit into one continuous journey. The trick is to move in one geographical direction and to handle the trickier borders and visas in the right order.
A logical sequence
A popular loop starts in Turkmenistan (the hardest visa), crosses into Uzbekistan for the Silk Road cities, dips into Tajikistan for the Pamir Highway, climbs through Kyrgyzstan’s mountains, and finishes in Kazakhstan with a flight home from Almaty.
Visas and borders
Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are visa-free or e-visa for most nationalities. Turkmenistan requires a letter of invitation, and some Tajik regions need a GBAO permit — arrange these well before you travel.
How long to spend
Budget roughly a week in Uzbekistan, four to five days each in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan for the mountains, and a few days apiece in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Padding your schedule leaves room for the slow border days.
